Editorial & corrections policy

Sourcing, headlines, case stages and corrections for global crime reporting.

Last updated: 4 October 2026. Editor and operator: Sahib Singh.

True Crime and Crime Fiction

True Crime Case Files use checked sources and never invent dialogue, thoughts, scenes or motives. Crime Fiction is an explicitly labelled separate format with imagined people, events and dialogue. It may explore broad crime themes but must not be presented as a reconstruction of an identifiable real case. AI-assisted authorship is disclosed in both formats.

Engaging headlines, accurate meaning

Headlines may be vivid and specific, but must match the article and available evidence. A suspected offence must remain alleged in the headline. We do not invent shocking details, imply guilt from an arrest, promise revelations absent from the story, or label an old development as breaking news.

Verification and chronology

Use an identifiable official statement, court record or reputable original report. Link to the source and record its publication date. Separate the event date, source date and our briefing date. Numbers, sentences, currencies and suspended portions must be checked against the source. Repeated syndication is not independent corroboration.

Case stages and fairness

Distinguish investigation, arrest, charge, conviction, sentence and appeal developments. Authority statements represent the issuing authority’s account. Do not invent a defence response or claim a person declined comment unless contact actually occurred. Update or withdraw a story when reliable outcomes require it.

Privacy and sensitive reporting

Avoid unnecessary victim identification, private addresses, contact information, graphic imagery and sensational reconstructions. Follow applicable anonymity rules, reporting restrictions and protections for children. Check those requirements for the jurisdiction and case before publishing.

AI assistance and images

AI-assisted drafting and conceptual artwork are disclosed. Generated images are not evidence and must not masquerade as a photo of a suspect, victim or event. Real images require verified rights and appropriate credit.

Corrections

Report the article URL, exact disputed passage and a reliable supporting source. Substantive corrections should identify what changed and why, with an update date. Corrections must not be obscured by silently refreshing publication dates.
